Our Home Cabin Archive

Progress to date on the home cabin project.

(Click on an image to see a larger version.)

Phase One:

Here is the land where the new home cabin is going to be built.

The trenches for concrete are dug and the concrete footings are poured.

Phase Five:

The post and beam rafters are prebuilt and ready to set up.

Flooring goes down for the cabin and the porches.

All flooring gets covered to protect it while building.

Phase Six:

Due to excessive heat this week the amish only worked 3 days. But here is what they got done - it’s finally taking shape!

Phase Seven:

We are underroof! Progress went fast this week with two crews building.

Inside the breezeway from the garage to the house

The sides going up -- way up!

We recommend a SkyTrak for all the lifting and HIGH work.

It looks like a maze, but it's really loft supports and bracing until the interior walls are placed. The finished ceiling - it’s way up there! I believe the ceiling is 25ft, 4ins from the floor.

Front of home - the front door seems tiny.

The loft floor for the master bedroom is in place
Another view of the loft floor for the master bedroom and the openings in the back of the house for the French doors both upper and lower The view when you walk in the front door - looking out the back of the house The view out the front of the house We are under roof and ready for the insulation on all the walls - remember, our cabins are built from THE INSIDE OUT

Another view across the pond
Phase Eight:

The home is being wrapped in 3HT foam insulation this week . We are using 2 layers of 1’’ foam. The dormer has been added to the front of the home.

3HT foam insulation and firring strips cover the back of the interior wall.

It's looking like a home this week! Dormer added to right side

French doors added to upstairs master bedroom and downstairs dining room

Exterior siding

Porch roofs have been added to the front, one more porch roof to go on the left side

Beginning of interior walls for downstairs bathroom

Our front door is in place!
Phase Ten:

Yes, it’s taken only 4 weeks to get this far on the house. Staining is the last step. Windows go in next and interior walls also. Hoping to have some outside porches added this week too.

Didn’t quite finish the staining on the front yet.

Looking from one loft over to the other with an incomplete crossover walkway on the left. Maybe that will be done this week too!
Phase Eleven:

We can lock our doors! Of course, there are no picture windows yet, but they are coming.

Phase Thirteen:
The red cedar spring house

Inside the spring house

The spring puts out about 500 gallons of water a day - plenty to supply the house and barn! The water is pure, we had it tested.

The plate glass windows for the back and front of the house

The amish rigged a pulley to lift and place the HEAVY double pane, tempered glass.

Downstairs guest bedroom: entry door on left, closet doors in the middle and door to bathroom on right

Calvin and I helped lift the glass - yes, it took all three of us to lift it!

VERY HEAVY!

The steps will go in the railing space SOON.

Concrete sidewalk and propane tank pad.

Porches and windows. Still missing 2 windows in the back here and 2 windows in the front.

The dog door - doesn’t everybody have one?

This is my kitchen/dining room space still needing cabinets. The fireplace will be ‘see-thru’ - the mantle is a hand-axed timber from an old house on our property that was built in the 1800’s. It’s oak and it’s heavy.
